Can Omega 5 oil "fix" ED?

My husband, Joe is a user of omega 5 oil that is derived from the seeds of pomegranates, mostly to maintain prostate health but we are aware that it has other benefits that are published on the net. After the age of 40 there are certain parts of the male body which require some boosting.

Recently, I have been advised by a colleague that the Omega 5 oil might have additional "side effects", if you believe the following story about ED testing.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is estimated to affect one in 10 men worldwide and 10 to 30 million men in the United States alone. The disorder can be caused by several factors, including arterial plaque, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, nerve damage, endocrine imbalance or depression. Ultimately, ED is a condition that affects the blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation.

The International Journal of Impotence Research, reported in early July 2007 that researchers from the Male Clinic, Beverly Hills, and University of California, Los Angeles tested the effects of pomegranate juice as a strong antioxidant on male subjects.

The researchers assigned 53 male subjects to two 4-week intervention periods separated by a two-week washout. Subjects were assigned to receive either a daily pomegranate juice, or a placebo beverage. Measures of erectile performance were obtained using International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and Global Assessment Questionnaires (GAQ). Mild ED is defined as the mildly decreased ability to get and keep an erection, while moderate ED is the moderately decreased ability to get and keep an erection. The majority of men with ED have moderate ED.

At the end of the study, 47 per cent of the men reported improvements after consuming the pomegranate juice, while only 32 per cent reported improvements during the placebo-phase.

While the results were not conclusive, researchers believe that the positive outcome might be due to the potent antioxidant content of pomegranate juice, which can prevent free radical molecules from disrupting proper circulatory function.

Now, there is data on the net to the effect that the pomegranate seed oil might be a stronger antioxidant than the juice, see:

Could omega 5 oil result in a better fix to ED than the pomegranate juice? I, for one, will ask Joe to try it over a period of 30 days to see whether it works.

There are several companies selling omega 5 oil on the Internet and one can also purchase the oil at Wholefoods in Marin County, just ask for pomegranate seed oil.

Make sure that you get the oil not the extract which is simply powder.

As with any medical condition, erectile dysfunction (ED) can best be treated promptly. The sooner it is diagnosed and treated, the better the outcome, for the following reasons:

First, identifying and correcting the underlying problem will help prevent further deterioration, a natural progression of the condition. There is no long-term benefit of treating only the symptoms of ED.

Second, disuse of an organ can cause progressive loss of function via progressive loss of healthy tissue. This condition is called “disuse atrophy” and is particularly important in the case of penile health, as explained next.

The penile tissue remains healthy, supple and functional only with a constant and healthy supply of oxygenated blood, which comes about only with regular episodes of erections. Therefore, an absence of erections, for whatever reason, can result in progressive loss of healthy penile tissue, leading to progressive loss of function. Once irreversible damage has occurred, treatment options may become more limited or unsuccessful. Therefore, the earlier ED treatment is sought, the better the opportunity for an effective treatment plan to restore healthy blood flow to the penis.
Third, ED is more than just a sexual problem. A fulfilling sex life can lead to greater satisfaction in many other aspects of life, including social, family and work environments.

Finally, a healthful sex life can contribute to your overall good health and well-being.

Studies indicate that couples with a healthy sex life are not only affected less by problems such as depression, anxiety, hypertension, diabetes, ulcers, chronic fatigue, viral illness and other ailments, but may also have a longer life expectancy. *

This is quite interesting,

about 90% of cases of ED are caused by physical factors, classified as vascular (related to blood flow) and non-vascular diseases. It is estimated that 70%1 of cases of ED may be attributable to vascular diseases alone.

The penis requires a healthy blood flow to become completely erect. Even a marginal reduction in blood flow can cause problems. This condition is referred to as “vascular insufficiency” and is known to be caused by or associated with the following risk factors:

High Blood Cholesterol
Cardiac diseases
Poor Overall Circulation
Research indicates that more than 200 prescription medications2 can cause, contribute to or aggravate ED. However, it is imperative that you must not discontinue your medications unless otherwise instructed by your physician.

Other associated physical conditions or causes are less common. These include:

Hormonal deficiencies caused by testicular disease, liver disease or thyroid problems.
Neurological problems such as Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke or Parkinson’s disease.
Trauma to the pelvic area as experienced in certain types of surgery, radiation therapy or automobile accidents resulting in damaged pelvic nerves or arteries.
Chronic illnesses such as chronic liver disease, chronic renal disease etc.
Peyronie’s plaque or disease, a peculiar condition of excessive fibrosis in the penile tissue
It is however, not uncommon to see ED in an otherwise completely healthy person, both physically and psychologically. It is postulated that the penile circulation is intrinsically precarious, being an end-artery. It may not take much over the years to cause a partial obstruction to blood flow to the penis, which, under normal condition may be inconsequential but may be enough to cause insufficiency of blood flow to the penis when sexually aroused, hence erectile difficulty.

Have you tried the Omega 5 oil?

Let me give you a woman's take on the situation:

Erectile dysfunction may be the end result of a complex interface between the psyche and the body. Before a specific treatment option is offered, the exact nature of the problems should be thoroughly diagnosed. The effective diagnostic process starts with a complete history of past and present medical and surgical conditions. A focused psychological assessment will often follow.

Next, there should be a diagnostic assessment concentrating on the hormonal, neurological and vascular aspect of penile functioning.

Two diagnostic tests are then usually performed by the attending physician:

The first, called Biothesiometry studies, assess the nervous supply to the penis.
The second, called Doppler ultrasound, assesses the blood supply to the penis.
These pain-free and non-invasive steps allow the physician to provide an explanation of the cause and extent of your problem, and to determine what treatment options would be most suitable.

Once this diagnosis is completed, a personalized treatment can be offered so that you can commence treatment privately and immediately. You may experience a resolution to your condition right away; i.e., experience of a strong and lasting erection, regardless of your age or underlying health problems. The treatment is safe, effective and may even be curative.

The successful treatments used by the Boston Medical Group are tailored to suit each patient’s needs, and to provide not only a relatively instant erectile response, but also a long-term cure rather than a temporary solution to your problem.

Many of the treatments we recommend aim to improve the penile health by increasing blood flow to the penis, revitalizing the penile tissue and increasing the penile elasticity, consequently improving erectile function. Patients may discover that after using their personalized treatchment for the recommended time, they no longer need it or rarely need it again.

Psychological factors are responsible for about 10%-20% of all cases of ED. It is often a secondary reaction to a fundamental physical cause. They often base from nervousness, performance anxiety or fear of failure during lovemaking. Psychological factors in impotence are often secondary to physical causes, and they magnify their significance.

Erectile dysfunction is a common disease that can happen to anyone although it is more common in men over 40, it may affect all ages. In fact, almost all men experience difficulty in maintaining an erection. In many cases, it is a temporary condition and goes away with little or no treatment. In some cases, it can be an ongoing problem and requires treatment.
