Pomega5 unaffected by new California bill to regulate pomegranate juice

A California bill affecting pomegranate juice claims
The Capitol Weekly reports:
The issue is pomegranate juice, a tart, healthful beverage rife with anti-oxidants and increasingly popular with the public. About four out of five pomegranates are grown outside the country. Of those grown in the U.S., most are grown in California, where some 250 farmers produce commercial pomegranates on some 35,000 acres, according to a Senate analysis. The yield is worth about $75 million annually.

“There is no doubt that if this bill gets approved there is going to be a turf war,” said K.C. Pomering, a fifth-generation pomegranate farmer in Madera. “The question is, do we really need this?”

The largest producer and distributor of pomegranate juice in the country is POM Wonderful, which is owned by California billionaire Stewart Resnick, a significant figure in California politics and the owner of Paramount Farms, the Franklin Mint and Teleflora. Resnick is a major donor to legislators of both major parties and to political campaigns, including more than $197,000 in 2007-08. The “Wonderful” in POM Wonderful, aside from the marketing benefit, also refers to a variety of pomegranate known as a Wonderful, grown in California. There are at least 300 varieties of pomegranates. All of POM Wonderful’s pomegranates are grown in the California’s Central Valley.

POM Wonderful and a coalition called the Partnership for Unadulterated, Real and Ethical Pomegranate Juice want California to adopt stringent rules governing the ability of pomegranate-juice sellers to list their product as “100 percent pure.” POM notes that it doesn’t buy foreign pomegranate juice - which may be cut with filler juices - and that it is the “only brand that controls its pomegranate juice from tree to bottle.”

“POM is the only brand guaranteed to contain 100 percent authentic pomegranate juice,” POM Wonderful says on its web site, noting that a number studies have documented the health benefits of pomegranate juice.

POM and its allies -- who, somewhat surprisingly, include the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees -- backed a bill that earlier set forth a series of scientific markers, based on information developed by studies that, among other things, detailed the chemical profile that contains the attributes of pure pomegranate juice.

AFSCME said the bill, SB 190, extols truth in advertising and that any dilution of pomegranate juice cuts its health benefits. Sen. Rod Wright, D-Inglewwod, who is carrying the bill, agreed.
“It only seeks to define what 100 percent is. If you want to call it “100 percent,” it has to be 100 percent,” Wright told an Assembly committee this week.

According to rivals of POM, those characteristics essentially gave POM Wonderful a competitive edge by freezing out other pomegranate producers whose product didn’t meet the chemical profile in the bill. The company itself said POM Wonderful was unique. “All of these studies featured patients who drank POM Wonderful 100 percent Pomegranate Juice, not any other brands.” The rivals include farmers and a national association representing juice producers, along with the California Nevada Soft Drink Association, which has members that own juice companies.

Wright has flatly rejected suggestions that the bill is intended to benefit POM Wonderful or any other single company. Studies of 45 different kinds of pomegranate juice from 23 different manufacturers showed that six of the 23 produced juice that met the 14-point criteria, not just POM Wonderful. The specifications by an entity called the International Multidimensional Authenticity Specification, or IMAS, were included in the bill.

But the Senate was suspicious, fearful that the legislation primarily benefited POM Wonderful. The upper house, which amended the bill five times, approved Wright’s legislation in a 36-1 bipartisan vote, but not before the specific IMAS criteria had been stripped from its language, among other changes. The result: The bill now requires the state Department of Public Health, which has opposed the bill as unnecessary, to study the issue and write regulations in two years. But there are rumors in both houses of the Legislature that the language removed by the Senate will be restored in the Assembly.

The bill emerged from the Assembly Health Committee this week and is expected to be heard by the Appropriations Committee. Committee Chairman Dave Jones, D-Sacramento, said he saw no indication from the language of the bill that it would allow unfair competition, as the bill’s critics contended.

Earlier, on July 1, the bill was changed - again - to say the proposed regulations would apply “regardless of the origin or source of the pomegranates.” The change occurred the same day that the Senate approved the bill. The lone dissenting vote was Sen. Mimi Walters, an Orange County Republican.

Critics believe the issue is federal, not state. “Every juice, not just pomegranate is regulated by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). This bill ties the hands of California processors. What if Washington state has its own rules, or Florida does the same thing with orange juice? We have federal standards already in place,” Pomering said.

“The bill keeps changing. It’s a chameleon,” Pomering added.

How to get your beauty sleep with POMEGA5 products

Tammy Win: I sleep only with POMEGA5 natural products

Beside recharging our batteries, does getting some Shut-Eye or Beauty Sleep have other benefits? Is it true that getting enough beauty sleep contributes to our beauty?
According to some recent studies, Canadian women, on average, sleep less than 6.5 hours, which is far less than the 8 hours our doctors prescribe. The consequences to lack of beauty sleep can be far more dangerous than some dark circles: as a result, these same women are more likely to suffer from chronic health disorders. Sleep and a good night rest is vital to our health and well-being: Form fending off wrinkles, to controlling your body weight, here are some important reasons why you need to make sleep a priority.

If you suffer from dull complexion, chances are, you are not getting enough "beauty rest"; the reason is simple: Lack of sleep ages the skin faster! It is during the deeper half of a two-stage sleep, the "delta sleep", when the growth-hormone levels are at their highest, and direct cells to repair damaged skin, giving us that healthy glow. When we skip this procedure, not only are we skipping the regenerative process (pre-mature aging won't be repaired) but our stress-hormone (Cortisol) reach high levels, and make the skin look older. Omega 5 oil products will help beautify your skin,

Another benefit that sleep and rest bring to the body is the facilitation in loosing weight. Sleep deprivation will result in higher appetite, because the levels of leptin (the "feel-full" hormone) are decreased, while the levels of ghrelin (the "feel-hungry" hormone) are increased. As a result, studies have shown that people who sleep less than 5 hours at night are more likely to be overweight, as they tend to be more tired and less active during the day (therefore burning less calories).

Lack of sleep will also affect the mind and the learning process. In students who trade a good night sleep for a all-night cramming study session, for example, it has resulted in lack of memory, as they might forget up to one-third of everything they learned that night (even days before). A good night sleep, on the other hand, will boost brain power.

There is also a reason why people who lack their 8 hours of beauty sleep seem moody; it's because people who sleep and get a good night rest, tend to feel better about life in general, and have a better attitude. Lack of sleep has been linked to depression, as a matter of fact, people who suffer from depression and insomnia share similar symptoms: irritability, fatigue, lack of concentration, dark thoughts and increased sensitivity to pain.

Can a good sleep however prevent sickness? Now that the winter season is approaching, a good sleep will help us ward off colds (more so than taking vitamins). A good night beauty sleep boosts the immune system, and our defenses against winter ailments. When we are sleep-deprived, we produce abnormal high levels of cytokines (proteins that send messages between cells), which can cause delays in the healing process. Consider this: when you sleep well, skin is repaired by antioxidants, which will reduce the risk of developing skin cancer. Further more, people who get 7 to 8 hours of good night sleep, have the greatest life expectancy.

It is safe to say, then that a good night sleep is vital to our beauty and well-being, the prescription? Let's make it a priority, if your busy schedule doesn't allow you to get enough beauty sleep at night, make some changes, after all, your life depends on it!
POMEGA5 oil capsules for the skin

As women we know that a lack of sleep leaves us irritable; however most of us are unaware of the damage it may be doing to our skin? Besides being an essential component of a healthy lifestyle, getting 8 hours of sleep per night helps improve the texture and the luminosity of our skin. During the night the skin is restored from the harmful effects of daily stress. When we do not get the required sleep our skin suffers. This is especially noticeable in the fragile skin under the eyes. The under eye area is almost fifty percent thinner than the skin on the face. Sleepless nights leaves behind fine lines, dark circles or puffy bags. Cosmetic treatments can soften the effects of sleep deprivation but preventive medicine is the best cure. Eye treatments are limited in their ability and cannot reverse the stress that a lack of sleep will do to the skin.

Sleep experts say that we need 8 hours of sleep per night. However, the latest research shows that women average 6 hours and forty minutes of sleep during the week and 7 hours on the weekend. Besides the extra work that women have to contend with (helping with homework, laundry, cooking, etc.) and the many concerns that keep them from sleep, women are also be kept awake by - small children who wake during the night, teenagers coming home late, aging parents who get up during the night.

What can we do to sleep more peacefully and longer? Here are some hints:

1. Eliminate noise from your bedroom. Bedroom sounds should be low and consistent. Try earplugs.
2. Keep your room dark by using dark fabric on your windows. If that is not possible, try eyeshades.
3. The temperature of the room should be cool.
4. A relaxing bath before you go to bed will induce sleep.
5. Set a schedule to arise, no matter what time you went to bed the night before.
6. Turn your clock so you can't see the time if you wake up in the middle of the night.
7. Keep TV's and computers out of the bedroom, make it a place just for sleep and sex.
8. Get a queen-size mattress if you don't sleep alone. We need room to move.
9. Avoid alcohol before sleeping. While alcohol may help us fall asleep, it will also wake us in the middle of the night.
10. Avoid nicotine before going to bed because it is a stimulant.
11. Don' go to bed hungry or overly full. Have a snack early in the night.
12. Watch your coffee intake. Caffeine from coffee, tea, cola and chocolate can affect you for up to twelve hours.
13. If you fret during the night or if you think of something that you must do the next day, write it down so you can deal with it in the morning.
14. Try natural-fill pillows such as down or feather because they have the most adjustability. If you suffer from back pain put a pillow between your knees for a more comfortable sleep.

Happy Sleeping!!!!!

Is Omega 5 oil a myth? You decide.

It is often questioned whether there is such a thing as Omega 5 oil.
First, you may want to read these two samples:

One, see the following note on this web site: http://www.stevepavlina.com/forums/467-post3.html

I'm not familiar with Omega-5, but I do know a fair bit about Omega 3,6 and 9 fatty acids. While pills (mostly based on fish oils) are a viable alternative to eating the oil, or even better - the plant or animal the oil came from - I happen to feel that there is a real energetic difference between taking something in pill form and taking it in a less refined form. Some of the pills, however, are simply the oil encapsulated - so there a difference is probably negligible.I also wanted to point out that flax oil or ground flax seed is a great alternative to fish oil and has a number of health benefits outside of its Omega-3 and Omega-6 containing qualities, perhaps most importantly trace minerals and plenty of fiber.

Two: a reply at this web site: http://netwellness.uc.edu/question.cfm/48305.htm

Question:

I would like to know is omega 3 is from fish oil? What about omega 5,6,9. Where are they from?? From vegetables or animals?? I`m a vegetarian. I don`t consume animal diet. I would like to be clarified whether it is safe for me to cook with cooking oil which contains omega 6 or 9 or 5. Thank you

Answer:

I would like to know is omega 3 is from fish oil? Yes, it is.

What about omega 5,6,9. Where are they from??
There is no omega-5.
Omega-6 come from plants.
Omega-9 comes from nuts and olive oil.

We have also checked the web site of Dr. Udo Erasmus, and could not find any data about the Omega 5 oil. see: http://www.udoerasmus.com/FAQ/FAQ_index_en.htm and http://www.udoerasmus.com/firstscreen.htm

This is what he says about good fats:

1. Green vegetables contain good fats, but in very small quantities. To get 2 tablespoons of good fats, a person would have to eat over 60 pounds of vegetables per day. That is impossible.

2. Seeds and nuts are richer sources of EFAs. But there is no seed or nut that gives an optimum ratio of n-3 to n-6 to keep us healthy in our present situation with food habits. Flax is the richest source of n-3, but a poor source of n-6. Sunflower and sesame seeds contain n-6 but no n-3. So we must mix and match these seeds to get both EFAs in the right quantities and ratio.

3. High fat, cold water fish such as sardines, salmon, trout, herring, and mackerel contain n-3 and n-6 derivatives. Eating fish is preferable to using fish oil capsules, due to contamination of fish oils with mercury, pesticides, and PCBs, and due to damage done to fish oils during processing.

4. Oils made with health in mind: pressed from organically grown seeds under protection of light, air, and heat; filtered and filled into dark glass bottles under the same protection; boxed to keep out all light; refrigerated during storage at the factory, in stores, and in the home; and used with care in food preparation (never used for frying, sautéing, or baking).

This chapter from a 2004 Japanese study can help:

Conjugated fatty acid (CFA) is the general term of positional and geometric isomers of polyunsaturated fatty acids with conjugated double bonds. It has been reported that conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), the CFA form of linoleic acid, has favorable physiological effects, such as anti-atherosclerosis, anti-obesity, anti-tumor, and anti-hypertension [1-9]. There are also other types of CFA in some plant seed oils. Punicic acid (9cis, 11trans, 13cis-conjugated linolenic acid; 9c, 11t, 13c-CLNA) is contained about 72% in pomegranate seed oil [10]. α-Eleostearic acid (9cis, 11trans, 13trans-CLNA) is contained in bitter gourd oil and tung seed oil about 60% and 70%, respectively [10,11]. Catalpa seed oil also contains catalpic acid (9trans, 11trans, 13cis-CLNA) about 31% and pot marigold seed oil contains calendic acid (8trans, 10trans, 12cis-CLNA) about 33% [10]. There are some studies showing that mixtures of CLNA isomers, prepared by alkaline isomerization of α-linolenic acid or plant seed oil, have some physiological functions including body fat reduction and anti-tumor activity [12,13]. In addition, purified α-eleostearic acid (9c, 11t, 13t-CLNA) and α-eleostearic acid rich bitter gourd seed oil also reveal anti-carcinogenesis in vitro and in vivo [10,11,14,15]. However, there are few studies evaluated the physiological function of punicic acid (9c, 11t, 13c-CLNA) [10,16]. Previously, we reported the hypolipidemic effect of purified punicic acid in human liver derived HepG2 cells [17].

In the present study, we investigated the effects of pomegranate seed oil rich in 9c, 11t, 13c-CLNA on lipid metabolism in Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima fatty (OLETF) rats. OLETF rats develop a syndrome with multiple metabolic and hormonal disorders that shares many features with human obesity [18-21]. OLETF rats have hyperphagia, because they lack receptors for cholecystokinin, and become obese, developing hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and hypertension. To clarify the physiological function of 9c, 11t, 13c-CLNA, we measured hepatic enzyme activities in relation to lipid metabolism and fatty acid composition in plasma of these obese, hyperlipidemic rats.

Now you may wish to make up your mind based on these facts:

Another oil which can also be helpful in the prevention or reversal of a cancerous prostate is omega-5 oil from pomegranate, also known as conjugated linoleic acid or CLA.Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has been shown to exert beneficial effects against carcinogenesis, atherosclerosis and diabetes. It has been demonstrated that CLA modulates lipid metabolism through the activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs).The PPAR family comprises 3 closely related gene products, PPAR alpha, beta/delta and gamma, differing for tissue distribution, developmental expression and ligand specificity. It has also been demonstrated that activated PPARgamma results in growth inhibition and differentiation of transformed cells or cancerous cells of the prostate or brain. These observations stimulated a great interest toward PPARgamma ligands as potential anticancer drugs to be used in a differentiation therapy.Glioblastomas are the most commonly diagnosed primary tumors of the brain in humans. The prognosis of patients with high-grade gliomas is poor and only marginally improved by chemotherapy. The aim of CLA research was to study the effects of CLA and of a specific synthetic PPARgamma ligand on cell growth, differentiation and death of a human glioblastoma cell line as well as on parameters responsible for the metastatic behavior of this tumor.
