Popular drug increases sex drive

Strange Side Effects Surprise Patients

Patients Often Unaware of Bizarre Side Effects Profile of Popular Drug

Russ Kelly of Yardley, Pa., was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease about five years ago. Before that time, he had always been a social gambler and drinker.

But when he began treatment for the condition that affected his coordination, handwriting and speaking abilities, the 62-year-old noticed sudden changes in his behavior as well.

He began to think nothing of making the one-hour drive to the Atlantic City, N.J., casinos several times a week. "If I was by myself one night, I might just hop in the car and drive down there on an impulse," Kelly says.

Though the thousands of dollars he lost at the blackjack tables were usually balanced by his winnings, his drinking spun out of control. He says he began slinging back tequila shots in addition to the one or two beers he typically drank after his weekly golf game.

One Tuesday night after golf, Kelly was arrested for driving under the influence, lost his license for 60 days and attended an alcohol rehabilitation program to clear his record.

"I could have killed somebody when I was driving," Kelly says.

Though some might accuse Kelly of having a midlife crisis or decompensating due to his Parkinson's diagnosis, he and his doctors attribute this impulsive behavior to his treatment -- which included the drug Mirapex.

Mirapex and Requip are two of the drugs prescribed for Parkinson's disease and Restless Legs Syndrome, or RLS. They both belong to a class of drugs known as dopamine agonists, which mimic the brain chemical known as dopamine.

Dopamine works in the brain's movement and coordination centers, and it is also involved in the brain's pleasure response by reinforcing behaviors that provide enjoyment -- including drinking, drugs, sex and gambling.

So while drugs such as Mirapex can help alleviate the motor problems associated with Parkinson's, they may also encourage such impulsive behaviors, some doctors say.

"It is believed that these medications overactivate the pleasure centers of the brain in an unregulated fashion," says Dr. Melissa Nirenberg, assistant professor of neurology at Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York. "What has been almost as dramatic as the behaviors itself has been the fact that when you discontinue these medications, these behaviors stop."

But Nirenberg and other doctors say that many neurologists and general practitioners who prescribe these drugs are unaware of the severity of the side effects, so patients are often left in the dark.

"There is still not enough physician awareness of this," she says.

Strange Side Effects

More than 10 million prescriptions have been written for Mirapex since the drug was launched in 1997, according to Kate O'Connor, director of public relations for Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc., maker of Mirapex.

Information about the possible behavioral side effects, including gambling, compulsive eating and increased sex drive, has been included with the product for the past several years. But O'Connor says that it is difficult to estimate how many people may have experienced these side effects.

"For the vast majority of people who take these medications, compulsive behaviors do not occur, although these isolated incidences are, of course, very unfortunate," she says.

Scientists have recently begun to quantify the behavioral changes associated with dopamine agonist drugs. In a study presented in late June at the International Congress of Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders conference in Chicago, more than 13 percent of 3,090 Parkinson's patients had a problem with compulsive gambling, buying, sex or binge-eating.

People who were taking either Mirapex or Requip had a two- to three-times greater chance of having one of the four impulse-control disorders.

"These disorders can often be devastating to people's personal lives, financial lives, and even physical health," says Dr. Daniel Weintraub, lead author of the study and assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Though Weintraub says that the benefits of the drug outweigh the negatives for most patients, he adds that "clinicians do have a responsibility to notify patients that these are potential side effects."

Nirenberg even says she fears that these side effects are more prevalent than the study indicates, because only four of the many types of irregular behaviors were analyzed.

She says that her patients tend to have gender-based differences in side effects, with women experiencing more compulsive shopping and eating and men turning more to hypersexuality and gambling.

She says she also has patients who would have been overlooked in the study -- a man who plays basketball compulsively for up to 36 hours at a time, and another who compulsively fishes. One spouse of a Parkinson's patient had to put a padlock on the refrigerator because of the compulsive eating, she says.

These impulsive behaviors have "potentially devastating consequences," Nirenberg says. "They have led to marital discord frequently ... shopping and gambling have led to financial losses, and eating has led to weight gain and secondary medical consequences."

But Are They Bad?

Dr. Eric Wassermann, neurologist and researcher at the Neurology Institute at the National Institutes of Health, says that the dopamine levels in the brain are normally lowered when a person experiences negative consequences of a behavior, such as gaining weight when overeating.

However, these medications keep the dopamine levels relatively constant. "If you are flooding the system, it is turned on constantly," Wassermann says. "Probably these addictive behaviors become overly reinforcing, and punishments like losing money don't work."

And certain behaviors stimulated by the drugs, such as increased sexual drive, aren't typically "punished" by drops in dopamine levels, Wassermann says.

"You just keep doing it over and over again and it keeps feeling good," he says.

Robert Simpson, 59, of New York City, is one of Nirenberg's patients who experienced an increased libido from the Mirapex. He began taking the drug in December 2005 and noticed an immediate change.

"I felt good," Simpson says. "Not high, exactly, but I felt a little buzz. It was a new experience. I liked the feeling."

He says he began buying pornography regularly, and masturbating two to three times a day.
"It wasn't actually causing anyone any harm," he says.

But when he told Nirenberg of this behavior, she immediately took him off the drug, just three months after he had started it.

"I don't know if it was exactly the next day [after I stopped], but whatever was triggering my feelings of sexuality was diminished again," he says.

Kelly also went off Mirapex just one week ago but says he hasn't yet noticed a change in his impulsive behavior. He says he wishes that he had known about the side effects of the drug earlier.

"It needs to be clearly drilled into people who take the drug, and to their family, to look for behavioral changes," he says.

Kelly says that his brother was the first to call him out, in a conversation that resulted in an argument. But his brother persisted, eventually calling Kelly's doctor to let her know about the problems with the drinking and gambling.

"Things got so bad within the past couple of months," Kelly says.

Though he had no idea that his brother thought the problem was serious enough to warrant a call to the doctor, Kelly says, "I'm happy he did."

Mirror, Mirror on the wall, which is the fattest nation of them all?

Research in Australia indicates that the country is on its way to overtaking the United States as the fattest nation in the world.

Obesity among Australian children has doubled in the last 10 years hitting 20% and still growing fast.

Overfed adults

US 61%
Russia 54%
UK 51%
Germany 50%
This, the report says, is leading to juveniles developing conditions normally only found in adults, like high-blood pressure, heart disease and type two diabetes.

A BBC correspondent in Sydney says the image of Australia as a sporting nation populated by fit, healthy people has been dented by the latest statistics on obesity.

Experts in Australia are warning that unless urgent preventative programmes are taken, Australia will become the fattest nation in the world in as little as a generation.

Doctors now regard obesity as a global health threat, saying it has raised the incidence of heart disease, stroke, breast cancer and colonic cancer.

Combating obesity

Another report published by Germany's Federal Statistics office indicates that nearly half of German adults are overweight.

Experts say reducing calories alone is not enoughHigh rates of obesity have been reported among the elderly, men and the widowed.

Studies by a Washington-based Worldwatch Institute show that the number of those overfed and overweight around the world has risen to 1.1 billion.

In the United States 61% of all adults are overweight compared to 54% in Russia, the UK has 51% and Germany 50%.

The report says the financial costs of obesity-related problems in the States is now estimated at $99bn a year.

Worldwatch Institute Chairman Lester Brown says that there is growing evidence that cutting down calories is not enough to combat obesity.

He says regular exercise is needed to maintain healthy body weight.

Happy Moms use POMEGA5 skin care products

Ask a mom if she's happier now that she has a child, and she'll usually say yes. But psychologists who study happiness often report a different picture. Being the mom of a young child (especially one under 3) is rewarding, but also a real strain on your mood.

Kids bring joy, says happiness expert Daniel Gilbert, but they don't increase your average daily enjoyment.

"Moment to moment, you may be exhausted, frustrated, sometimes angry," says Peter Ubel, M.D., a professor of medicine and psychology at the University of Michigan. In fact, on their list of pleasurable activities, moms rank child care lower than eating, exercising, or watching TV, according to a University of Michigan study. And kid care rates only slightly higher than housework, working, or commuting!

"Kids do bring joy," says Daniel Gilbert, Ph.D., a psychology professor at Harvard University and author of "Stumbling on Happiness." "They bring transcendent moments that outweigh all the hard work. It's just that children do not increase your average daily enjoyment."
The happiness paradox

One reason for the discrepancy between moms and experts: selective memory. When psychologists ask moms in a general way if they like spending time with their kids, the overwhelming majority say they do because they're thinking of fun activities like reading a book or playing in the park. When they're specifically asked to describe their actual daily routine, they remember the hours they spent struggling to get their child dressed or ready for bed. Maybe, though, the cold calculus of psychological science is missing the intensity of joy that time spent with your child can bring. "There are little moments that are grand-slam home runs," says Gilbert. Luckily, those moments can overcome your daily frustrations. "Happiness is more than just that smiley feeling," says Karen Reivich, Ph.D., a research associate in the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania. "It's also feeling a connection to something larger than yourself. When people are in service to something bigger, they describe their lives as filled with meaning. It's not the smiley face, but when it's all over, you realize you'd do it again." The first step to being a happier mom, then, is to value what you do -- to feel that it's important. The next step is to find ways to make it more enjoyable. Here's how:

Admit when you're stressed

Ironically, once you stop expecting motherhood to feel warm and fuzzy all the time, life as a mom gets easier. "It's okay to feel frustrated, angry, or irritable sometimes," says Dr. Ubel. "You're not a bad parent. It's not even a bad parenting experience. It's just normal."
Get enough sleep
Most of us know that money can't buy happiness, but who knew that a good night's sleep just might? That's a key finding of that University of Michigan study. "Making $60,000 more in annual income has less of an effect on your daily happiness than getting one extra hour of sleep a night," says study author Norbert Schwarz, Ph.D., a professor of psychology.

So how can you sneak in that extra hour or two? Misha Sauer, mom of 1-year-old Riley, says her husband takes over on the weekends so she can sleep in. "It makes a big difference in the way I feel," says the Culver City, California, mom. "And I'm more willing to do something active, like take my daughter to the park. If I'm tired, the most I can do is sit there and read to her."
(Re)consider your priorities

It may sound simplistic, but one key to being in a more positive mood is to structure your day so you do more things you enjoy. "It's how you spend your time, not your money, that counts," says Dr. Ubel. "If you have any financial flexibility that lets you maximize your family time, use it now. For instance, do you really need to be the one to clean the house? How about paying someone to help out? And if that's not an option, think about how clean your house really needs to be -- do you need to make the beds, or is bed-making time better spent drawing pictures with your kids?"

Go with the flow
Time seems to slow down when you're doing what you enjoy, whether it's gardening or running laps. People who experience this level of engagement -- which psychologists call "flow" -- are happier than people who rarely do. And you're lucky to have a master of it right before you: your child. "To you and me, every leaf and ant is pretty much the same, but not to a toddler," says Reivich. "So try to actively notice things as your child does -- the ant dragging a piece of bread, for instance."

Bringing more of your best qualities -- your strengths -- to the often mundane tasks of child rearing can also help you feel more engaged. "One of my strengths is humor," Reivich says. "I was making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for my kids one day, and I started talking like it was a cooking show: 'Now I'm browning the bread, now I'm applying a thin layer of peanut butter.' It transformed a mundane task into something we could all enjoy."
Savor the moment
One way to nourish positive emotions is to take a moment to appreciate, well, the moment. Just map out two- or three-minute activities that you can do that day to relish that time. In the morning, for instance, instead of trying to do ten things, take your cup of coffee to the window, and sip it while your child plays in an Exersaucer. Notice what's going on. Will it change your life? No, but you'll probably feel calmer.

Gilbert has an even shorter way: "Take ten seconds every hour to look at what you're doing from a higher place." While you're at it, appreciate what a wonderful child you have -- those chubby cheeks, that toothless smile -- and share that joy with someone who'll rejoice in it with you. That's another way to grab onto the good stuff and prolong your happiness.
Take the long view
Having a sense of perspective will also improve your attitude. "It gives you more patience, and it certainly awakens you to the preciousness of the moment, which is fleeting," says M.J. Ryan, author of The Happiness Makeover. She remembers the times when her daughter wanted to sit on her lap and watch a video. "Yes, I had other things to do. But I said to myself, 'How long will this last?' I'm grateful for that time with her."

If the drudgery is getting to you, think about life without children. "It's easy to get caught up in the details, but you need to step back and realize how empty your life would be without these people in it," says Gilbert.

Reconnect with your spouse
A supportive group of friends and family is one of the cornerstones of a happy life, and for many moms, the center of that social circle is their partner. That's why it's so important to keep the lines of communication open, especially during the "diaper years" -- infancy to age 3 -- that experts say are the most stressful on a marriage.

"You can't say, 'I'll handle the relationship later,'" says Reivich. "A healthy and realistic goal is to ask, 'What are some small, manageable things we can do to keep our connection strong during this rough time?'" It can be as easy as going food shopping together, she says. "Once you make little steps, it's easy to move on to bigger ones, like a night out."

Even discussing how stressed you both are can help. "If you can both just say, 'Raising a kid is hard,' putting it out there diminishes the strain," says Sauer.
Say thanks
Feeling grateful is a mood booster. It can be as simple as saying grace every night or finding new ways to acknowledge others. "When our extended family gets together, we go around the room and say one thing we appreciate about each person," says Elizabeth Howard, mom of Reilly, 2, in Anaheim, California.

Another effective way is to put what you're thankful for down on paper: Write the three best things that happened today. Experts say that if you do that every day for two weeks, your feelings of well-being will increase.

Of course, you'll still have bad days. But at least you'll be less likely to think there's something wrong with you. And the more you engage in positive thinking, the more you'll realize how much happiness is under your control. "I think of happiness as three things -- enjoyment, satisfaction, and fulfillment," says Ryan. "Mothering can give us any one of those at any given moment yep, if not necessarily all of them at the same time!"

Lovemaking and POMEGA5

If you thought you knew everything about sensual lovemaking, we bet you don’t…

The eyes have it

Keep your eyes open during the entire erotic encounter. Let your eyes feast on her face. Well, okay, if that all sounds like gibberish then just make eye contact with her - it’s wildly intimate and very romantic.

Take your time

See it as the ultimate “love-athon” but without the aim of beating Carl Lewis. Feel yourself settling into the rhythm of each other’s bodies, not dictated by early morning alarm clocks or pots boiling on the stove. Set aside hours to climb the sensual peaks and troughs of your lover’s body.

Dynamite without the explosion

Ever heard of the Karezza Method? The end result - get this - isn’t orgasm. The aim is to relax and enjoy mutual touching. In fact you are only meant to orgasm when you want to conceive a child. It’s the iron man of lovemaking: endless, gruelling and designed to keep you hard for a long time to come.

Pre-foreplay warm-up

Get her in the mood by conducting foreplay before the foreplay. Write her a sensual love story which you leave in an envelope in the car. In it she’s a beautiful princess and you’re her suitor, determined to spend a night of passion with your lady love. Remember it’s sensual, it’s romantic and you’re in charge of creating the anticipation (half the secret of an incredible love-making session).

When you finally begin making love, touch those parts of her that you seldom touch during the run-of-the-mill sex act, such as her eyelids (tip: make her close her eyes first), cheekbones and contours of her lips. Touch the base of her spine, between her shoulder blades, the tip of her nose, her knees - parts of her that are seldom stroked.
Constant touch

If you’re going to give her a sensual massage, make sure that you always keep one hand on her body; probably something to do with the transfer of energy. But, more simply, it just keeps the two of you constantly physically connected.

Why suffer this Mother's Day? enjoy beauty products by POMEGA5

Americans in households making less than $30,000 a year spend nearly 20% of their lives in moderate to severe pain, compared with less than 8% of people in households earning above $100,000, according to a landmark study on how Americans experience in pain. The findings, published Thursday in the British journal the Lancet, also found that participants who hadn't finished high school reported feeling twice the amount of pain as college graduates. "To a significant extent, pain does separate the classes," says Princeton economist Alan Krueger, who authored the study along with Dr. Arthur Stone, a psychiatry professor at Stony Brook University.

Krueger notes that the type of pain people reported typically fell on either side of the rich-poor divide. "Those with higher incomes welcome pain almost by choice, usually through exercise," he says. "At lower incomes, pain comes as the result of work." Indeed, Krueger and Stone found that blue-collar workers felt more pain, from physical labor or repetitive motion, while on the job than off, which at least offers hope that the problem can be mitigated. This finding "emphasizes the need for pain preventing measures [in the workplace] such as better ergonomics," wrote Juha H.O. Turunen, a professor of social pharmacy at Finland's University of Kuopio, in an accompanying commentary to the report.

People with chronic pain also worked less, the new study found, costing U.S. businesses as much as $60 billion annually. These conclusions are in line with previous studies on productivity lost to common pain conditions, including a 2003 report finding that nearly 15% of the U.S. workforce's output was diminished by ailments such as headaches and arthritis. What's new in Kruger and Stone's study, however, is the level of detail with which the researchers were able to chronicle the lives of Americans in pain. With the help of the polling firm Gallup, they asked nearly 4,000 survey participants to diarize their daily activities over a 24-hour period. From these personal accounts, the researchers saw the impact pain had on people's emotional states. Though participants said interacting with a spouse or friend lowered their pain, those suffering chronic pain tended to socialize much less. They also spent a lot more time watching televisionabout 25% of their day compared with 16% for the average person.

Pain also appeared to be a major driver of healthcare costs. Krueger and Stone found that Americans spent about $2.6 billion in over-the-counter pain medications and another nearly $14 billion on outpatient analgesics in 2004, the most recent data available. But in these numbers, too, there may be a distinction between the haves and the have-nots. A 2005 study in Michigan showed that minorities and the poor have less access to such drugs than wealthier Americans because local pharmacies don't stock enough pain medications such as oxycodone or morphine. "Those [pharmacies] in white ZIP codes were more than 13 times more likely to have sufficient supplies," says lead researcher Dr. Carmen Green, an anesthesiology professor at the University of Michigan. "I have patients who have to drive 30 miles or more just to get their pain medications."

One characteristic that pain doesn't seem to distinguish is gender: according to Krueger and Stone's study, men and women were nearly equally likely to find themselves in pain. Another is age. People reported more aches and pains as they got older, though surprisingly that pain tended to plateau from ages 45 to 75. "Maybe people reach a point in their career where they move up the ladder into a desk job," Krueger says. "Or maybe they've just learned how to cope with the pain."

Fact: Oral Health and Skin Care go hand in hand, women who elect teeth whitening are most likely to use Pomega 5 oil products for great looks

Where can I find POMEGA5 products?
Great skin care
We all love Omega 5 products

What should you ask your dentist about Pomega5 ?

You may want to start by speaking with your dentist. He or she can tell you how to purchase the Pomega products and whether whitening procedures would be effective for you. Whiteners may not correct all types of discoloration. For example, yellow-ish hued teeth will probably bleach well, brownish-colored teeth may bleach less well, and grayish-hued teeth may not bleach well at all. Likewise, bleaching may not enhance your smile if you have had bonding or tooth-colored fillings placed in your front teeth. The whitener will not effect the color of these materials, and they will stand out in your newly whitened smile. In these cases, you may want to investigate other options, like porcelain veneers or dental bonding.

What is in-office bleaching?

If you are a candidate for bleaching, your dentist may suggest a procedure that can be done in his or her office. This procedure is called chairside bleaching and may require more than one office visit. Each visit may take from 30 minutes to one hour.During chairside bleaching, the dentist will apply either a protective gel to your gums or a rubber shield to protect the oral soft tissues. A bleaching agent is then applied to the teeth, and a special light may be used to enhance the action of the agent. Lasers have been used during tooth whitening procedures to enhance the action of the whitening agent.

What are at-home procedures and products?

There are several types of products available for use at home, which can either be dispensed by your dentist or purchased over-the-counter.

Bleaching solutions. These products contain peroxide(s), which actually bleach the tooth enamel. These products typically rely on percent carbamide peroxide as the bleaching agent, carbamide peroxide comes in several different concentrations (10%, 16%, 22%).
Peroxide-containing whiteners typically come in a gel and are placed in a mouthguard. Usage regimens vary. Some products are used for about twice a day for 2 weeks, and others are intended for overnight use for 1-2 weeks. If you obtain the bleaching solution from your dentist, he or she can make a custom-fitted mouthguard for you that will fit your teeth precisely. Currently, only dentist-dispensed home-use 10% carbamide peroxide tray-applied gels carry the ADA Seal.
POMEGA5 products are made of Omega 5 oil, a by product from pomegranates

You also may want to speak with your dentist should any side effects become bothersome. For example, teeth can become sensitive during the period when you are using the bleaching solution. In many cases, this sensitivity is temporary and should lessen once the treatment is finished. Some people also experience soft tissue irritation—either from a tray that doesn’t fit properly or from solution that may come in contact with the tissues. If you have concerns about such side effects, you should discuss them with your dentist.

Toothpastes. All toothpastes help remove surface stain through the action of mild abrasives. "Whitening" toothpastes in the ADA Seal of Acceptance program have special chemical or polishing agents that provide additional stain removal effectiveness. Unlike bleaches, these ADA Accepted products do not alter the intrinsic color of teeth.

How should I choose a whitening product?

When selecting a whitener or any dental product, be sure to look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance—your assurance that they have met ADA standards of safety and effectiveness.

Milk or Pomegranates Omega 5 oil -- the prostate dilema

In labs, Omega 5 oil has shown the potantial
of anti tumor activity against prostate cancer
So, should I drink less milk and use Omega 5 oil soft gel caps instead?
Natasha demonstrates an unusual and provocative benefit of milk
Pehaps she should have used POMEGA5 oil

A provocative study from Harvard Medical School shows that men who eat diary products regularly have a 30 percent greater chance of suffering prostate cancer than those who eat less than half a serving per day.How can this be?

Isn't milk a health food? Many of you will be shocked by these findings, but this study is the largest done yet, it is done by arguably the most respected epidemiology teams in the world and there is a physiologic explanation for the results. Milk is loaded with calcium and taking large amounts of calcium lowers blood levels of the body's form of vitamin D called 1,24 dihydroxyvitamin D that prevents cancers (2). Of course, milk is usually fortified with vitamin D, but there is so much more calcium than vitamin D in milk that the extra calcium drains vitamin D from the body.

This study shows that men who take in more than six glasses of vitamin D fortified milk per week have lower levels of vitamin D than those who take in fewer than two glasses. This tells you that you shouldn't believe everything that you hear, even if it comes from scientific studies. These studies imply that you don't need to drink milk and that taking calcium supplements may harm you. Lack of vitamin D is usually caused by lack of sunlight as very few people get the vitamin D that they need from food. Vitamin D deficiency is common in winter, particularly in people who live in the northern parts of the globe and people with dark skin.

We completed a multicenter study of the effects of pomegranate cold-pressed (Oil) or supercritical CO2-extracted (S) seed oil, fermented juice polyphenols (W), and pericarp polyphenols (P) on human prostate cancer cell xenograft growth in vivo, and/or proliferation, cell cycle distribution, apoptosis, gene expression, and invasion across Matrigel, in vitro. Oil, W, and P each acutely inhibited in vitro proliferation of LNCaP, PC-3, and DU 145 human cancer cell lines. The dose of P required to inhibit cell proliferation of the prostate cancer cell line LNCaP by 50% (ED50) was 70 mg/mL, whereas normal prostate epithelial cells (hPrEC) were significantly less affected (ED50 5 250 mg/mL).

These effects were mediated by changes in both cell cycle distribution and induction of apoptosis. For example, the androgen-independent cell line DU 145 showed a significant increase from 11% to 22% in G2/M cells (P , .05) by treatment with Oil (35 µg/mL) with a modest induction of apoptosis. In other cell lines/treatments, the apoptotic response predominated, for example, in PC-3 cells treated with P, at least partially through a caspase 3-mediated pathway. These cellular effects coincided with rapid changes in mRNA levels of gene targets. Thus, 4-hour treatment of DU 145 cells with Oil (35 µg/mL) resulted in significant 2.3 ± 0.001-fold (mean ± SEM) up-regulation of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21(waf1/cip1) (P < .01) and 0.6 ± 0.14-fold down-regulation of c-myc (P < .05). In parallel, all agents potently suppressed PC-3 invasion through Matrigel, and furthermore P and S demonstrated potent inhibition of PC-3 xenograft growth in athymic mice.

Overall, this study demonstrates significant antitumor activity of pomegranate-derived materials against human prostate cancer.

Pomegranate seed oil was investigated for possible skin cancer chemopreventive efficacy in mice.

In the main experiment, two groups consisting each of 30, 4-5-week-old, female CD1 mice were used. Both groups had skin cancer initiated with an initial topical exposure of 7,12-dimethylbenzanthracene and with biweekly promotion using 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA). The experimental group was pretreated with 5% pomegranate seed oil prior to each TPA application.

Tumor incidence, the number of mice containing at least one tumor, was 100% and 93%, and multiplicity, the average number of tumors per mouse, was 20.8 and 16.3 per mouse after 20 weeks of promotion in the control and pomegranate seed oil-treated groups, respectively (P < .05).

In a second experiment, two groups each consisting of three CD1 mice were used to assess the effect of pomegranate seed oil on TPA-stimulated ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity, an important event in skin cancer promotion. Each group received a single topical application of TPA, with the experimental group receiving a topical treatment 1 h prior with 5% pomegranate seed oil. The mice were killed 5 h later, and ODC activity was assessed by radiometric method. The experimental group showed a 17% reduction in ODC activity. Pomegrante seed oil (5%) significantly decreased (P < .05) tumor incidence, multiplicity, and TPA-induced ODC activity.
Overall, the results highlight the potential of pomegranate seed oil as a safe and effective chemopreventive agent against skin cancer.

How can you tell if you are an OMEGA 5 addict?

Wives of sex addicts are sometimes addicted to POMEGA5 products

Are you a sex addict?

According to the National Association of Sexual Addiction Problems, about 14 million adults are. That’s 1 out of 17 adult Americans. In assessing your addiction status, consider just some of the following questions posed to potential “sexaholics” by Sex Addicts Anonymous (SA):

Do you ...

— Look at sexually arousing materials in the media?
— Feel guilt and shame after having sex?
— Find yourself in need of a variety of sexual activities in realizing sexual excitement and relief?
— Risk the chance of pregnancy or sexually transmitted infection when intimate?
— Feel shame about your body or sexuality to the point you avoid intimacy?
Do you find yourself answering, “Well, yes, that does describe me?!”? If it’s any comfort, that makes most of us. Yet, according to SA, you could be a sex addict. All of us could be.

There’s just one problem with this. It’s a crock.

While you may not see anything wrong with your sex life, other people do. Medical and counseling professionals and members of the clergy — with no background in sexuality — are being aggressively trained to identify and deal with a supposed issue cleverly labeled “sex addiction.”

Their goal: to make a disease of your sex life. Moralistic and misinformed, they’re out to judge you. They’re telling you what should be sexually acceptable for you. After all, in their book, sex is dangerous. If you don’t fit their vision of sexual “wholesomeness,” then you’ve got a problem.

According to this movement, a sex addict is typically someone who is frequently fantasizing or doing sexual things, even despite a dislike for such. This person’s sexual behaviors are considered out of control ... . for example, masturbating more than once a day. A sex addict is also one whose sexual behaviors fail to mirror his or her highest possible self.

Besides being absolutely ridiculous, there are a number of reasons why the concept of sex addiction is nothing more than a fabrication.

First, a basic issue with sex addiction is the term itself. The word “addiction” is not listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). This handbook for mental health professionals uses the term “dependence” instead.

Second, an addiction, such as to alcohol or tobacco, is a physiological dependence. Deprived of a fix, an addict has physiological reactions, like increased heart rate or the sweats. Physiological changes take place — changes that a "sex addict" does not experience when denied sex. Thus, the addiction label is quite deceptive.

Third, who has the right to set the standards as far as what’s “frequent” or “out of control”? We’re all sexually unique when it comes to what we do and how often. Yet this movement seems to think that we can put a fixed number on our sexual activity. Unbelievably, they also see it as their right to enforce cookie-cutter criteria when it comes to sexual pursuits.

Lastly, another major issue with sex addiction is that it denies the “dark” side of healthy sexuality. This includes the major desire components of sex, such as:

— The “bad” fantasies people have;
— The ability to enjoy sex without being in love;
— The lust for power during sexual exchanges;
— The wanton sexual expectations people have from time to time.

What’s infuriating is that there is nothing wrong with these components of healthy sexuality, as long as the interaction between two lovers is informed and consensual.

But, despite being hogwash, sex addiction is catching on, thanks to its evangelists’ Jerry Springer-worthy stories.

Often in recovery themselves, self-proclaimed addictionologists love generalizing their own problems to all. Playing upon one’s sexual ignorance, they dish out the sordid details of how sex hijacked their lives, making them steal, do drugs and visit prostitutes. Engrossed and mortified, the public buys it — even though there's no data supporting that this can happen to just anyone.

Falling victim to the movement are those with the greatest shame around sex. In distancing themselves from their sex guilt, they embrace their sex addiction “diagnosis.” They’re not at fault for their sexual impulses and desires. Something else is – their addiction! The safety of this powerlessness becomes their crutch. Now they can say, “That’s my addiction talking.” You know what I’m talking about. We’ve seen this happen too many times with major public figures.
POMEGA5 collection

The thing is, humans do have the ability to control how they express their sexual impulses, including not doing so. Being out of control isn’t the issue for most “sex addicts.” It’s being in control that’s causing pain.

The ultimate price of this sex addiction ploy is that a person’s true “dilemma” with his or her sexuality and sex life fails to be properly assessed. In trivializing one’s sexual desires, the need for real therapy becomes a tragically missed opportunity.

Yes, there are a handful of cases where someone does have a problem – when their sexual activities are deemed more important than their relationships, work, finances, etc. But these situations are rare. And the issue isn’t sex; it’s something else.
I guess my husband is not a sex addict while I am certainly an Omega 5 oil addict

Botox is dangerous -- OMEGA 5 oil technology is not

POMEGA5 -- the Un-botox natural treatment

Botox could become known as the Jekyll and Hyde of the drug world

On the one hand, the nerve-paralysing agent – one of the world's most powerful poisons – is the subject of a safety review by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) because of fears that it can spread to the brain, leading to breathing difficulties and death.

On the other, the drug beloved by celebrities around the world for its wrinkle-removing properties has been hailed as the aspirin of the 21st century, with the power to treat a growing range of disorders.

Botulinum neurotoxin type A – sold commercially under the name Botox – disrupts nerve signalling by targeting SNAP-25, a protein that helps carry neurotransmitters between adjacent nerve cells. It causes botulism, a paralytic illness that can be fatal.

Clinicians have assumed that the powerful poison is safe for use – including for cosmetic purposes – because studies suggest it sits at the site of injection and does not spread through tissue. That may be an assumption too far, however.

Smoking gun

"Those studies were based on the tracking of toxins radiolabelled with 125-iodine," says Christopher von Bartheld at the University of Nevada, Reno, US. Botulinum toxins labelled with iodine stayed put, while similar tetanus toxins spread from the point of injection, he says.

But botulinum is extremely potent, he explains. "A few molecules – maybe even one toxin molecule per synapse – can block neurotransmitter release at that synapse for many days."

Matteo Caleo of Italy's National Research Council reasoned that tiny quantities of botulinum – too small to trace by radiolabelling – are strong enough to interfere with nerve signalling elsewhere in the body.

So his team tracked the spread of botulinum using a "smoking gun" method – they looked for the fragments of SNAP-25 protein destroyed by botulinum.

Toxin spread

Caleo's team injected rats with botulinum neurotoxin type A at various points in the face and brain. In all cases, they found evidence that the toxin spread from the site of injection after just three days.

Rats given Botox to their whisker muscles, for example, had the tell-tale signs of botulinum activity in their brain stems.

"The fact that three different neuronal populations transport botulinum neurotoxin type A makes us suspect that this spread is a common occurrence after toxin delivery," says Caleo.

It's a result that echoes other recent findings. Last month, Walter Herzog at the University of Calgary, Canada, and his team reported that injecting botulinum neurotoxin type A into a leg muscle in cats affected the strength not only of the muscle targeted, but also of the neighbouring muscles.

Human dangers

Botulinum neurotoxin type A is the subject of an ongoing safety review by the FDA. In February, on the basis of a growing body of evidence that the toxin can spread from the site of injection and cause breathing difficulties, the FDA notified the public of the potential dangers.
"Most of the cases that we are concerned about have been in paediatric patients who have been treated for spasticity," Russell Katz of the FDA said at the time. "There has been at least one death attributed to these distant effects."

But Caleo is not convinced that his new evidence for the spread of botulinum is necessarily bad news. "Whether the distant actions result in 'negative' or 'positive' effects remains to be clarified," he says. "One might imagine that some of these distant effects are even beneficial for the patients."

We use Omega 5 oil products

Giampietro Schiavo of Cancer Research UK agrees that the spread of botulinum from the point of initial injection might open up a new avenue of therapeutic benefits.

"I think that Caleo's perspective comes from another of his recent studies in which his team found they could use botulinum to block epilepsy," he says.

New aspirin?

Epilepsy is a nervous system problem due to the abnormal firing of nuclei deep in the brain. Caleo's team found they could reach and silence a number of those nuclei with a simple botulinum injection, because the toxin spreads from the point of injection. "That is totally unprecedented," says Schiavo.

Schiavo says that the toxin is safe for cosmetic use if administered by a properly trained physician. The problem is not everyone administering the drug is what Schiavo would call "properly trained".

Erle Lim and Raymond Seet of the National University of Singapore have fewer qualms. Their article – Botulinum toxin, Quo Vadis? – published in the journal Medical Hypotheses notes that, after 25 years of use, botulinum shows promise as a therapy for a huge range of conditions, including solid tumours, joint diseases and bronchial arthritis.

Botulinum might even treat acne. The indications, they say, are that the toxin could become as versatile as aspirin.

Actress Virginia Madsen has been named the new spokeswoman of Botox, but she may want to reconsider her endorsement now that new studies are suggesting that Botox may move from the face to the brain! [Fashionista, New Scientist]

Woman's World links cellulite treatment to POMEGA5

CLA combined with cellulite therapy shows dramatic improvement

Impressive" results were published of apilot study investigating the effects of an herbal therapy and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) as an integrated approach to fight cellulite [Adv Ther 2001 Sep-Oct;18(5):225-9].

Cellulite is the body's way of storing fat in women to ensure enough calories for pregnancy and lactation. Fibrous membranes that lay between deposits of soft tissue work to gather fat into discrete pockets. These bands of connective tissue run from the dermis to deeper layers of connective tissue that separate muscles from organs, and allow the skin to dimple and become irregular [American Academy of Dermatology].

For the study, 60 women were assigned to three groups; one, taking an herbal anti-cellulite pill alone, and two other groups taking the herbal pill plus 400 mg and 800 mg of CLA, respectively.
At the trial's conclusion, there were "visible but minimal" improvements in cellulite appearance in only two women who took the monotherapy and an average loss of 0.33 inch of thigh circumference. Eleven women in that group showed no improvement, the investigators wrote.

In the group taking the combination therapy with the lower dosage of CLA, eight women showed improvement in cellulite appearance, but ten showed none. Thigh circumference decreased an average of 0.58 inch.

However, of the women taking the combination treatment with the highest dosage of CLA, eleven showed improvement in cellulite, two displaying "marked improvement." The average loss in thigh circumference was nearly one inch.

"...The results obtained with the CLA supplement were more impressive and occurred in a higher percentage of participants," the study authors concluded.

Best way to rid self of seriously awful cellulite, short of surgery?

As I lurch through my thirties, I find myself carrying around some serious cellulite on my thighs.
And arse. And... arms and belly. Knees even. I swear to god, one minute I was 21 and sort of plump but relatively firm and the next, in my thirties, wobbling and sagging like some kind of terrible 'before' makeover picture.I know this might seem like shameless-vanity filter, but it really is distressing me. I'm posting anonymously because it's screwing with my head.
I feel horribly embarrassed and ashamed, to the point of tears and refusing to take my clothes off, and turning down invitations to go swimming, or to the beach.
This isn't just a bit of cellulite, or a little wobble, it's... awful. Really. I feel borderline deformed.
So far I've been:1. Cutting out caffeine (tea, coffee, coke, red bull, V etc).2. Cutting back on processed food. (Main vices have been chocolate and icecream.)3. Stuffing myself with moderate portions of fruit, veg, wholegrains and protein.4. Exercising like a mofo, starting with weights 3 x a week, walking and swimming and building up (slowly*) to add in cycling and running5.
Taking a multivitamin daily.*Slowly because I want these changes to stick and also my knees are buggered.I already drink 2-3 litres of filtered water daily and have done for a couple of years. My skin improved immeasurably zit-wise, but it did nothing for the cellulite. Unless, I suppose, it could be worse.I've done a fair bit of googling about creams and lasers and diets and exercise and things, but there's not much that isn't advertorial.
And so, hive mind, I ask what (if anything) you have done for your dimples - that has worked?1. Supplements (apart from the obviously not-very-good for you fen-fen and the like)?2. Creams? (Head tells me total bunk, but hope springs eternal.)3. Endermologie, lasers?4. Healthy eating and exercise? (This seems like the obvious one to me, but about how long 'til you saw improvements?)
And I have the obligatory anon gmail address if anything comes up here that needs a reply: lonesome dot thighway at gmail dot com.Last, could I pre-empt anyone suggesting that referring to myself as deformed is a little extreme? I know.
But that's how I feel. I also know I should learn to love myself for the beautiful unique snowflake I am. And I'm working on that. For now, I'm just looking for advice on reducing cellulite. posted
