Pomegranate wine is superior to red wine

Pomegranate wine has greater protection capacity than red wine on low-density lipoprotein oxidation.

Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, Ege University, Bornova-Izmir, Turkey.

Although there is a large body of evidence on the main role of red wine in protection of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) against oxidation, there are few data on the role of pomegranate juice, which has high phenolic content. We conducted this study considering the possible importance of pomegranate wine as an antioxidant and in order to make a comparison between red and pomegranate wines. The phenol levels of pomegranate and red wines (4,850 mg/L gallic acid equivalents and 815 mg/L gallic acid equivalents, respectively) were in accordance with their total antioxidant activity (39.5% and 33.7%, respectively). Both wines decreased LDL-diene levels following a 30-minute incubation period compared with controls (145 +/- 3.2 micromol/mg of LDL protein).
However, pure pomegranate wine demonstrated a greater antioxidant effect (P < .01) on diene level (110 +/- 4.6 micromol/mg of LDL protein) than pure red wine (124 +/- 3.2 micromol/mg of LDL protein). In conclusion, we suggest that pomegranate wine has potential protective effects toward LDL oxidation, and it may be a dietary choice for people who prefer fruit wines.

A guide to positive skin care

An Owner's Guide To Skin Care, Maintenance And Protection
By: Herb Denenberg

This owner's guide will show you how to maintain healthy skin, minimize the chances of skin cancer, slow the aging process, slow and control inevitable wrinkles and protect yourself from serious skin problems.

Rule No. 1: The Mayo Clinic says the most important goal in good skin care is to protect yourself from ultraviolet light from the sun, tanning booths and anywhere else. Protect your skin from the sun, and avoid tanning booths altogether. Avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun. By doing so you minimize your chances of skin cancer and unnecessary and premature aging. Don't assume you're protected just because you have dark skin.
The blue-eyed blonde and redhead may be most vulnerable to the harmful effects of ultraviolet, but everyone's skin will become leathery, blotchy and wrinkled when exposed long-term to the sun. So use a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 15. Even on cloudy days, about 80 percent of the carcinogenic rays of the sun pass through the clouds.
In the winter, the sun's ultraviolet rays still penetrate through. I've had a dermatologist recommend patients use sunscreen all year long. This is certainly a good idea at high altitudes, for ultraviolet radiation increases 4 to 5 percent for every 1,000 feet above sea level. You also need a sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Sunscreen ingredients that do so include oxybenzone, octylmethyl cinnamate (cinoxate), solisobenzone, salicylates, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, avobenzone and ecamsule (Mexoryl SX).Don't let those sun rays get through to your skin. They do more than cause cancer. They also suppress the immune system, cause what is called photoaging and, of course, can cause burns and tans, which are both injuries to the skin. You should also wear protective clothes. That includes more than a thin T-shirt or other material easily penetrated by the sun.
A wet T-shirt is even less protective than a dry one. Proper protection calls for long-sleeve shirts and blouses and broad-brimmed hats. Sunglasses are a good idea, as exposure to the sun is associated with cataracts. What's more, sunglasses protect the delicate skin around the eyes, which is prone to cancer and premature skin aging due to the sun.The sun's rays are more damaging as you get closer to the tropics. They are also most damaging at midday (from about 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.). They are most damaging when they are long-term or allowed to cause a severe burn. Even one sunburn on a child can have severe consequences later in life. As indicated, the sun is more dangerous at high altitudes and around certain surfaces that can reflect the sun's rays sideways and upwards: snow, sand, water and concrete. Some doctors recommend some exposure to the sun, as it hits the skin and manufactures vitamin D.
But that may mean perhaps only 10 minutes a day. The most recent studies show that even a small amount of sun is adequate. That means even with a sunscreen you will get enough sun for the body to make its vitamin D, at least for the fair-skinned. You can take a vitamin D supplement if you want to avoid the sun altogether and don't get enough vitamin D in your regular diet. The Mayo Clinic also recommends moisturizing your skin daily in order to help protect it from the harmful effects of the sun. This and other references to the Mayo Clinic in this column are from its Family Health Book (3rd edition).
There are hundreds of moisturizers to choose from. One of the best is Vaseline, a brand name for petroleum jelly also called petrolatum. The Johns Hopkins Health Book says that to get rid of the sticky feeling of Vaseline, you can wipe it with a moist washcloth. The late, great dermatologist of Temple, Fred Urbach, also told me even Crisco is a good moisturizer. Many do not like Vaseline or Crisco on their skin due to smell or greasy feeling, but there are alternatives. Dr. Victoria A. Cirillo-Hiland, of the Bryn Mawr Skin and Cancer Center, recommends creams, as they are more moisturizing than lotions. Among the creams she recommends for dry skin are Moisturel, Cetaphil, Eucerin and Nivea. If your skin is dry, you may want to keep a moisturizer at every sink, so you can moisturize right after washing your hands.
Rule No. 2: Eat a healthy diet if you want healthy skin that looks younger and better. That's the advice of the Weill Cornell Medical College's Food and Fitness Advisor Newsletter (January 2008). It says the right diet protects your health and, along the way, your skin. It cites a recent major study finding that women between the ages of 40 and 74 with a diet high in vitamin C were less likely to have wrinkles, and those with a diet high in linoleic acid had less dryness and skin atrophy.
Some of the best sources of vitamin C are citrus fruits, bell peppers, broccoli, tomatoes, guava, papaya and potatoes, says the newsletter. And much of the diet for a young and healthy skin is suggested by this finding. Here it points to more consumption of fruits and vegetables, one of the most important elements of a healthy diet. It quotes a Weill Cornell dietician on some of the other elements of the right diet: "A diet complete with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and lean protein is needed to keep the skin and the rest of the body looking and feeling great." This again indicates a skin-healthy diet is simply a healthy diet. The dietician notes that linoleic acid (also known as omega-6 fatty acid) is good for the skin, but you don't want too much of it. She says chances are your diet already has enough omega-6 as it is commonly found in vegetable oils such as corn oil, sunflower oil, soy oil, and safflower oil. It is also found in pumpkin seed, wheat germ and evening primrose oil.
This dietician adds that you can eat your way to an unhealthy body and unhealthy skin by offender fats and carbohydrates. Foods high in offender fats are red meat, dark-meat poultry, full-fat dairy, butter, lard, and oils. You also want to avoid foods cooked with a lot of fat. They would include fried foods, fast food, desserts and cream-based sauces. Some fat is necessary, but too much is a disaster for the body, including the skin. You want good carbohydrates, such as those found in fruits and vegetables. You want to avoid or minimize those found in table sugar, white breads and white rice.
Rule No. 3: Don't smoke. Smoking can destroy health and cause disease in too many ways to count. But it also directly damages the skin. It does that by the constriction of blood vessels caused by nicotine. Those constricted blood vessels cut off the needed flow to blood that delivers nutrients to the skin. The Mayo Clinic writes, "Over time, smoking can cause your skin to become pale and sallow. It can cause deep wrinkles to develop around your lips and slow your skin's ability to heal." That's why smokers are so much more difficult for plastic surgeons.
Rule No. 4: Use the right cosmetics. This means you have to match your cosmetics to your skin type. For example, Mayo writes, "If you have skin that is oily or acne prone, use a water-based product that's labeled noncomedogenic, which means that it's less likely to clog the small opening in your skin (pores)."
Rule No. 5: Clean your skin gently. This means using a mild soap for your face. If it is dry, you may want a mild super-fatted soap such as Basis or Dove, advises Mayo. Don't use hot water on your face, but instead use tepid water. Mayo also has detailed recommendations for minimizing the drying effects of bathing on the skin:* Use warm, not hot water. Limit your baths to 15 minutes. And cut down to perhaps two or three a week.* Use Dove or Basis soaps or similar varieties to minimize drying effects. Add Aveeno oatmeal powder or bath oils to your bath water. Use soap only on your face, underarms, genital areas, hands and face. Use clear water in other areas.* Apply an oil or cream to your skin immediately after drying. Mayo suggests a heavy, water-in-oil moisturizer. For some reason Mayo forgot to mention another important point. Don't dry and rub vigorously with a towel after bathing. It's easier on skin, especially dry skin, if you pat it dry.
Rule No. 6: Shave gently. If you shave with a razor, make sure it is sharp. Men should apply a warm washcloth and use plenty of shaving cream. Mayo recommends that you "pass the blade over your beard, only once in the direction of hair growth. If you reverse the stroke to obtain a close shave, you can cause a skin irritation called a razor burn." You can also irritate the skin with an electric razor if you use it improperly or too vigorously.Women who shave or use a hair remover also need to avoid skin irritation. Check any hair remover on a small patch to be sure it will not cause skin irritation.
The source for Omega 5 oil

Rule No. 7: Keep your living area properly humidified and at the optimum temperature. Dry air contributes to dry skin. The Johns Hopkins Family Health Book recommends humidity of 40 degrees or more for optimum skin care. If you have a humidifier attached to your heater, be sure it is set properly in accordance to manufacturer's instructions to produce the right level of humidity. The same goes for other kinds of humidifiers. You don't want too high a humidity either, as that can contribute to the growth of mold in the house and other problems. To minimize the drying effect of heat, keep the room temperature at about 68 degrees Fahrenheit or lower.
Rule No. 8: Avoid irritating and tight clothing. Some people find wool and synthetic fabrics next to the skin irritating. So use all natural cotton instead in that case.
Rule No. 9: Wear the right clothes in the winter to protect your skin. For example, the Johns Hopkins Family Health Book recommends, "Wear gloves or mittens outdoors during the winter to retain moisture, and avoid strong winds."
Rule No. 10: Check your skin periodically for signs of cancer or other problems that may need treatment. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends as follows: "Early detection is the surest way to a cure. Develop a regular routine to check your body for any skin changes. If a growth, mole, sore or skin discoloration appears suddenly or begins to change, see a dermatologist. It is wise to have an annual skin examination by a dermatologist, especially for adults with significant past sun exposure or a history of skin cancer."
Rule No. 11: Protect your skin from injury. It is the great protective barrier of the body, keeping out infection and other harmful substances. So any injury to the skin is not only a problem in itself but may open your body up to still more serious problems. That's why it is important to nip problems in the bud. Control dry skin before it produces cracks and other openings in the skin that can be a pathway to infections and other problems.Rule
No. 12: Emphasize prevention rather than waiting until you confront serious problems of dry skin. For example, if you have problems in the winter, step up your moisturizing in the fall.
Rule No. 13: Follow the rules for good health in general, as they will also deliver healthy skin. For example, in discussing care of the skin, the Johns Hopkins Family Health Book also recommends getting adequate exercise and sleep and avoiding the abuse of alcohol.

Study: The antioxidant benefits of pomegranate juice are superior

Antioxidant benefits of POM Wonderful 100% pomegranate juice
top red wine, grape and acai juices

New testing methodology reveals POM Wonderful 100% pomegranate juice has superior antioxidant power compared to other beverages and is the only pomegranate juice guaranteed to contain 100% pomegranate juice

LOS ANGELES (February 28, 2008) – A recent study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry found that pomegranate juice from the California-grown Wonderful variety of pomegranate is the leader in the healthy beverage category by demonstrating the most complete free radical scavenging activity, greater protection of LDL-cholesterol from oxidation, and the highest polyphenol content compared to red wine and several juices.

The study, led by Dr. David Heber at the Center for Human Nutrition, David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California Los Angeles, found that POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice tested higher in overall phenolic content and antioxidant activity than red wine and Concord grape, blueberry and orange juices. POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice even ranked higher than other beverages that have recently been touted as containing superior levels of antioxidants such as acai juice and white and green teas. Unlike all previous studies that only included one test against these other types of beverages, this Heber study conducted a series of seven tests on all the beverages, resulting in a novel and more accurate methodology.

“Often times, a beverage will make a claim about its superior antioxidant content based on the results of one test alone that provides the highest antioxidant capacity,” said Dr. Heber. “What is important about this study is that all the beverages included were run against several tests resulting in a more complete assessment of a beverage’s antioxidant activity and capability.”

Results of the study showed that POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice had the greatest range of free radical fighting ability. The antioxidant potency composite index was at least 20% greater than any other beverage included in the study. To determine overall antioxidant content and functionality, each of the polyphenol-rich beverages included in the study were run against four tests for antioxidant potency.* In addition, all beverages were tested for their ability to inhibit LDL oxidation and evaluated for total polyphenol content.

POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice is the only pomegranate juice backed by $23 million in medical research. Over the last decade, 10 medical research studies have been published in peer-reviewed journals documenting the beneficial effects of POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice on human health, particularly in regards to heart disease, prostate cancer and erectile dysfunction. Through its proprietary juicing technology, POM Wonderful is the only company able to extract the full benefits of polyphenol antioxidants and guarantee its juice is 100% authentic pomegranate juice derived from its California-grown Wonderful variety of pomegranate.

Skincare During Pregnancy: Safety Tips for Skin Care and Beauty

Skincare-News.com offers seven safety tips for skin and beauty during pregnancy.

Sacramento, CA (PRWEB) February 27, 2008 -- Every mom-to-be knows how important overall health is during pregnancy, and most women pay a lot of attention to staples like diet and exercise. However, skin care is something that many women neglect. Skincare-News.com's latest article, "Pregnancy and Your Skin: Tips for Beauty and Safety!" highlights the most important safety concerns to keep in mind during pregnancy. http://www.skincare-news.com/articles.php?ArtID=519

1. Easy on the essential oils. Essential oils are a relaxing addition to many day spa and at-home treatments, but for pregnant women, some essential oils are harmful. Stay away from the following common essential oils (this list isn't exhaustive): Angelica, Aniseed, Cedarwood, Chamomile (German and Roman), Cinnamon, Clary Sage, Ginger, Jasmine, Juniper, Marjoram, Myrrh, Peppermint, Rose, Rosemary, Sweet Fennel, Sage and Wormwood.

Essential oils, however, are known for their soothing and calming benefits. Some oils can relieve nausea, ease muscle pain and even induce labor. Midwives, for instance, use essential oils like jasmine and clary sage to induce contractions. The key is to dilute the oils, because essential oils are very concentrated. So if a recipe calls for 10 drops, cut it in half to five. Pregnant women should always talk to a doctor before using any essential oil.

2. Chemical exfoliants, out! Retinoids, a form of vitamin A, are effective exfoliators, in addition to their other jobs in treating acne, boosting collagen and being a wrinkle-reducing wonder. But for pregnant women, these products are a no-no! Research has suggested that high doses of vitamin A are harmful to the baby.

Also avoid using salicylic acid, a BHA or beta-hydroxy acid that is very effective in treating acne. Commonly used in exfoliators and antiaging creams, cleansers and toners, salicylic acid is part of the aspirin family. Because taking aspirin has been linked to various complications during pregnancy, it's recommended that moms-to-be stay away from using salicylic acid topically too.

3. Better shave than sorry (and maybe wax). Dermatologist Dr. Diane Berson tells BeautyiVillage.com that it's better to shave during pregnancy, and avoid cream hair removers -- also known as depilatories -- because the chemicals sink into the skin. And while waxing is safe for some women, keep in mind that the skin will be more sensitive during pregnancy.

4. Sunscreen: Don't leave home without it. Aside from the ever-present danger of sunburn and skin cancer, the hormonal changes of pregnancy can cause melasma or pregnancy mask, a darkening of the skin around the nose, eyes and forehead. UV exposure worsens melasma.

5. Choose simplicity for a skin care routine. Pregnant women should use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer during pregnancy, and keep the body hydrated all day.

6. Get that glow with the basics. During pregnancy, some women tend to skip makeup altogether or go overboard and look too made-up. Renowned celebrity makeup artist Bobbi Brown tells Babycentre.com the easy, pretty essentials every pregnant woman should have in her makeup bag: concealer, yellow-toned foundation, pink blush and her favorite lipstick.

7. When in doubt, seek a doctor out! If unsure about a product or specific ingredient, always consult with a dermatologist or obstetrician. Many times physicians are overly cautious and conservative about makeup and skin care products, but as the saying goes, "it's better safe than sorry."

Pomegranates and the cocktail culture

Pomegranate sows seeds of content

I fell in love with pomegranates as a kid. My mom occasionally bought me one, and I’d spend who knows how long prying glistening tart-sweet seeds from the leathery, ruddy skin.

But that childhood fun proved bothersome as an adult. Who had time to wrestle a pomegranate when there were hors d’oeuvres to prep and drinks to shake up?

Then came POM Wonderful. I know, it was certainly possible to juice a pomegranate before the California-based company launched its line of bottled juices about six years ago, and now there are other brands. But POM’s visibility, coupled with a spate of research into the fruit’s health benefits, made pomegranate an “it” flavor.

Is pomegranate still hot?

Probably not. Açai holds that honor. While the pomegranate has earned a permanent spot on the cocktail menu, Omega 5 oil skin care made of pomegranate seed oil is hotter than fire.

Of course, pomegranates aren’t really new. The tree, an Iranian native, was domesticated around 3000 B.C., according to POM Wonderful’s Web site.

The fruit spread throughout India, Northern Africa, China, Europe and the Americas, along the way symbolizing health, fertility and rebirth in the art, literature and religion of countless cultures.

Pomegranates even have something of a history in cocktail culture. Their juice was once a main ingredient in grenadine, although that’s no longer the case. Most commercial brands now rely on other fruit and artificial flavors and colors.

But if you want the real thing, make your own using instructions from Gary and Mardee Regan of Ardent Spirits, as published in The Craft of the Cocktail (Clarkson N. Potter, 2002): Juice a pomegranate using a levered fruit juicer, then add 1 ounce of simple syrup for every 3 ounces of pomegranate juice.

Pomegranate juice itself brightens fruity cocktails, or the seeds can be muddled à la caipirinha, but other drink ingredients easily overwhelm their flavor. Happily there are several pomegranate-flavored liqueurs and spirits that stand up to their cocktail companions.

PAMA pomegranate liqueur (about $22 for a 750-milliliter bottle) smells like real fruit, with a full, balanced flavor that shines when mixed with pear-flavored vodka and grapefruit juice in a cocktail Restaurant Michael Smith calls the Pear Tart.

Chateau Pomari ($18) is another option. It’s deeper red, with a syrupy, almost cloying, sweetness. Both are 34 proof. Add a splash of either to a glass of Champagne or sparkling wine for a New World take on the venerable Kir Royale, or substitute pomegranate liqueur for the Campari in a Negroni.

Or try a pomegranate vodka. Charbay’s ($30) is my top pick, with its dark peach color, vibrant and authentic character and long finish.

JP Wine Bar in the Crossroads Arts District combines it with Amontillado dry sherry, lemon juice and Peychaud Bitters for what it calls the Charbay Carnival.

Pearl Persephone ($20) is clear, with a weightier, rounder mouth feel and subtler pomegranate flavor. Both brands are 70 proof and can be substituted for the vodka in your favorite martini, Cosmopolitan or other cocktail recipe.

I guess pomegranates are fun for grown-ups to play with, too.

Pear Tart is a favorite cocktail of Nancy Smith, general manager at Restaurant Michael Smith in the Crossroads Arts District. It’s a seemingly incongruous combination of flavors — pear, pomegranate and grapefruit — that works only if you use freshly squeezed, ruby red grapefruit juice.

Pear tart Makes 1 cocktail
1 1/2 ounces Absolut Pear vodka
3/4 ounce PAMA pomegranate liqueur
2 ounces fresh squeezed ruby red grapefruit juice
Grapefruit slice for garnish (optional)
Combine ingredients with ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with grapefruit slice and serve.
Cheers

Wal-Mart Seeks Green Ideas

To help it meet its sustainability goals, the retail giant has launched a Web site to help it meet greentech entrepreneurs.

Want to sell to Wal-Mart? The retail giant wants to make it easier to make your pitch.

The company on Tuesday launched a Web portal for greentech entrepreneurs to submit ideas, spokesman Kevin Loscotoff announced in a keynote speech at the Cleantech Forum.

The Cleantech Group, which helped develop the Cleantech Accelerator portal, will evaluate the submissions and send finalists to Wal-Mart, which will make the final decision about which ideas to take on.

Wal-Mart hopes the portal will help the company meet its sustainability goals of using 100 percent renewable energy, reaching zero waste and selling more sustainable products, he said.

"We want to begin encountering more innovators to help us meet our goals," Loscotoff said, adding that Wal-Mart believes the portal will help it tap into the wide source of entrepreneurs and inventors.

The corporation is seeking technologies that will provide a good return on investment and that it can adopt within two years, he said.

Wal-Mart is particularly seeking technologies in alternative batteries for forklifts, wind harvesting, closed-loop water processing, sustainable building materials, household hazardous wastes and organic and oil-based wastes, he said.

"Sustainability is more than just a responsibility," Loscotoff said. "It’s an opportunity for all of us to bring about real and sustainable change."

POMEGA5 is Considering Start-up TV Network Fundability to Raise National Awareness of Green Technologies in Nutraceuticals

POMEGA5, a greentech company, is considering a VC investor round

Start-Up TV Network Launches Fundability Web Site to Connect Entrepreneurs with $50 Billion in Investment Capital

FOLSOM, Calif., Feb 25, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Start-Up TV Network Inc. today announced Fundability as its new company brand and the launch of www.fundability.com, a new web-based marketplace where investors and entrepreneurs make serious investment connections.

With angel investors and venture capital firms investing more than $50 billion every year in seed- to mid-stage companies, Fundability's online marketplace helps venture capitalists and angel investors find quality deal flow and accelerate the early stage funding process.

Fundability uses web video and rich media to showcase companies combined with due diligence tools that simplify investors' research and communications.

"We built Fundability with a hands-on understanding of early stage investing from both perspectives - the entrepreneur's and the investor's," said Steve Nilan, Fundability's CEO and co-founder. "We start with quality deal flow and qualified investors in a friction free environment where interaction is easy and painless. It's all about accelerating time to funding through better communications, VC-caliber diligence and syndication tools in a secure environment. It's just a better way to get deals done."

Fundability bridges the gap between the fast pace of entrepreneurial startups and the slow and inefficient fundraising process.

Entrepreneurs can send their company's Fundability Deal SnapShot(TM) (a weblink to their online, interactive executive summary) directly to investors. The Deal SnapShot(TM) communicates in a single screen what otherwise would require many megabytes of email attachments or large printed documents. Qualified investors can search for deals in the marketplace that meet their personal investment criteria (industry, stage, funding round) and perform online due diligence in Fundability's DiligenceRoom(TM).

Investors can also choose to have pre-screened deals sent automatically to them by creating an "Investor SweetSpot." Investors can join or start a Virtual Investment Group and syndicate deals with other groups or individual investors within the Fundability network.

Deals are already flowing through the site.

During the company's beta phase in the third and fourth quarters of 2007, several companies used the Fundability platform, including two that closed rounds totaling more than $5 million from a venture firm, Velocity Venture Capital, with a syndicate of angel investors.

Jadoo Power (www.fundability.com/jadoopower) raised more than $3 million in less than 60 days using the Fundability Platform. Marquiss Wind Power www.fundability.com/marquisswindpowerinc) completed a $1.5M Series A in under three months.

Fundability is available to entrepreneurs for a monthly subscription of $49.99. Accredited investors who complete an SEC questionnaire are given a free basic membership to the site. The Company also offers private-labeled versions of the Fundability platform to investor groups, investment banks, venture capital firms and later stage companies that need private deal flow management and investor relations websites.

About Fundability

Fundability, based in Folsom and backed by Velocity Venture Capital, was founded by investors and entrepreneurs who have first-hand experience with the challenges of early stage investment. We know that raising capital is tough for entrepreneurs and that finding a fundable deal is never simple for the serious investor. Fundability brings innovation to the early stage funding process and accelerates connections between quality deals and qualified investors. Fundability is the new business marketplace where deals get funded faster. For more information, go to www.fundability.com.

Pomegranate Bars Capture Fun Fruit's Flavor, Nutrients

Pomegranates bursting with sweet-and-tart juice and slippery little seeds--or "pips"--may be the world's most fun-to-eat fruit. Now, thanks to a process invented by Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists in California, you can enjoy the flavor of freshly harvested pomegranates even when this fruit is out of season, or when you don't have the time to section and savor it.

A new, all natural, snack-size bar captures the taste of orchard-fresh pomegranates and apples, yet slips conveniently into a child's lunch sack, a grown-up's briefcase, or a hiker's backpack for an on-the-go treat.

Tasty, fat-free and all-natural, FruitFast bars are made using food-processing technology developed by ARS scientists in California. Photo courtesy Flavonoid Sciences.

Moist and chewy, each fat-free bar contains only about 100 calories and is rich in fiber, vitamin C and anthocyanins--natural compounds that may benefit our health.

Food technologist and research leader Tara H. McHugh of the ARS Western Regional Research Center in Albany, Calif., is co-inventor of the technology used to make the "Wonderful Pomegranate FruitFast" bars from whole fruit, without the need for artificial preservatives or other additives.

Flavonoid Sciences of Eastport, Mich., manufactures and markets the pomegranate-apple bars, as well as two other new flavors also made with the ARS-developed technique: Montmorency CherryFlex FruitFast Bar and Wild Blueberry IQ FruitFast bars. All are newly available online at www.FruitFast.com and at a growing number of stores.

McHugh and agricultural engineer Charles C. Huxsoll of Moraga, Calif., now retired from ARS, created the food-processing approach as part of research to help find new ways to entice kids, teens and adults to eat the recommended five to nine servings a day of fruits and vegetables. It's estimated that less than 20 percent of Americans meet that guideline.
The new bars are a boon for growers and processors, giving them new markets for perishable fruits. The technology allows them to make fruit into puree and concentrate that--after the busy harvest season winds down--can be processed into the all-fruit bars.

A gloomy future for corn ethanol producers and a rosy future for Green Cosmetics such as POMEGA5

More investments in green cosmetics less in green biofuels

Kerry Dolan On Green Technologies

The Big Trend

Energy storage.

The race is on to come up with such technologies as advanced batteries, fuel cells, compressed-air devices and anything else that can store solar and wind energy so it can be used when needed. In transportation, recharging stations for electric and plug-in hybrid cars might double as mini-power plants.

The Unconventional Wisdom

A new breed of green technology companies-–those that hail from outside the clean energy field-–will emerge as the game changers. Wal-Mart already committed to using 100% renewable energy and has begun asking suppliers to measure their energy use. Where does the ripple effect end? Google's decision to put hundreds of millions of dollars into renewable energy research is aimed at dramatically lowering the cost of solar power. They could pull it off.

The Misplaced Assumption

Subsidizing renewable energy, in the form of tax credits or rebates, is wrongly perceived by many to be a tax on the U.S. economy. Incentivizing investment in infrastructure that enables greater use and adoption of solar, wind, geothermal and hydroelectric power will help to gradually wean our economy off oil and coal. And it will create plenty of jobs.

The Watch List

Clorox: Clorox will introduce this month a new line of plant-based cleaning products called GreenWorks that it says work as well or better than conventional cleaners. This could lead the way to more mainstream companies selling green cosmetics like POMEGA5, green clothing and green cars.

Project Better Place: Former SAP executive Shai Agassi raised $200 million to launch a system that operates networks of battery-charging and battery-replacement stations for electric cars. Can he change the way the auto industry works? Wal-Mart: It bought its own utility in Texas and is installing solar panels on the roofs of its stores. Will it be the first to sell solar panels, or a cheap electric car? And will it become a big purchaser of yet another green technology?

The Bold Prediction

As many as 90% of green technology companies will fail--though not in 2008. There is too much venture capital and private equity money chasing too many similar ideas.
Do we really need another corn ethanol producer, or another me-too solar concentrator company?
In 2008, we'll see belt-tightening and cutbacks among the struggling crowd. Most of the liquidations won't begin to happen until 2009.

Can beautiful skin come in gel caps?

Does good skin come in a tablet or Gel Caps?

By Evelyn Theiss

Great skin just got another wrinkle.

Cosmetic treatments are no longer just about creams and emollients — the latest trend is about working from the inside out. "Ingestibles" are supplements such as omega-3 oils, alpha lipoic acid, grape seed, pomegranate extract and many other nutritional-sounding words you never used to hear at the cosmetics counter.

While supplements have long been a staple at health-food stores, many credit Nicholas Perricone, the New York dermatologist-to-the-stars, as fueling the beauty-biz trend with his best-selling books, such as "The Perricone Prescription." He recommends eating a lot of salmon, among other foods high in omega-3 oils. Perricone's line of supplements is sold at stores such as Sephora; a multipack is $130. Other recommend the Omega 5 oil solution.

Here's a closer look at beauty ingestibles, which hope to capture a significant share of the $45-billion-a-year cosmetic and skin-care market.

The science

Since skin is our body's largest organ, it reflects our health. So, as Harvard-trained dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon Carolyn Jacob says, "The creams and lotions and potions you put on top of your face mean nothing if you're not eating well."

Foods with antioxidants as well as foods with anti-inflammatory properties are the key to preserving a youthful appearance, says Jacob. Refined sugar and flour and trans-fats are all examples of inflammatory foods.
"Inflammation and oxidation can both a
ssist in the breakdown of tissue and cell destruction, leading to wrinkles and other skin problems."

The foods

A sampling of books by doctors, dermatologists and dietitians (including such respected names as Dr. Andrew Weil, Dr. Michael Roizen and Dr. Mehmet Oz, with their latest best-seller "You: Staying Young") lists some of the top antioxidant foods as acai berries, celery hearts, onions, spinach, kale, cocoa beans, blueberries, cranberries, kidney beans, red beans and hazelnuts.

Some of the foods high in anti-inflammatory properties are lemons, salmon, seaweed, green tea, flax seed oil, cinnamon, ginger, raw almonds, walnuts and the spice turmeric.

So why add supplements?

Doctors and nutritionists say even people who make a point of eating a diet rich in healthy, unprocessed foods don't get all the nutrients they need. Whether it's food processing, a time lag from harvesting to getting produce to the table or the environment we live in, doctors say it's easy to miss out on vitamins. Vitamins and supplements, write Oz and Roizen, "are an insurance policy for an imperfect diet."

Some ingredients that have been proven to help with skin include alpha lipoic acid; pine bark extract; grape seed extract; omega-3 fatty acids; vitamins A, C, E and D; calcium; magnesium; copper; selenium; and biotin, Dr. Jacob says. You can find all of them in the vitamin and supplement aisle of grocery, drug- and health-food stores.

Do ingestibles work?

Medical experts seem to agree that supplements aren't harmful in recommended doses. But do they actually work?

"We know that things we ingest can have a positive or negative effect on our bodies and skin, and antioxidants or anti-inflammatory foods have a positive effect," says Dr. Michael Reep, a dermatologist in Westlake, Ohio. "But supplements per se haven't thoroughly been studied, so we don't know if they'd have the same effect. The FDA hasn't examined this, we don't know exactly what's in the supplements and so on.

"Theoretically, they might help, but for now you have to keep it as theoretical."

That said, Reep himself buys supplements that he thinks are good for his skin, but he gets them at GNC: CoenzymeQ10, green tea and grape seed extract, and vitamins C and E.

"If people want to spend the extra money on supplements, they can do that," he says.
What's out there?

Dozens of new ingestible lines are on the market, ranging widely in price. On the lower end, Target offers a range from the British-based Boots Chemists, designed to cleanse, purify and revive the body; it's $19.99 for a five-day supply.
The POMEGA5 line stand on its own with prices starting at $18 for the Cleansing Bar and ending with the Healing Cream at $62.
From there, prices rise dramatically. The Perricone line, available at some department stores and Sephora, includes omega-3 wild sockeye salmon oil soft gels, Super Berry Powder and a Skin & Total Body packet ($130 for a 30-day supply). The Dr. Murad line, also available at Sephora stores, offers a supplement formula that costs $125 for a one-month supply.

Pomegranates and erectile dysfunction -- can you improve your sexual performance?

Joe and Stuart use Omega 5 oil gel caps by POMEGA5 on a daily basis

According to a pilot study released in the International Journal of Impotence Research (http://www.nature.com/ijir), POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice was found to have beneficial effects on erectile dysfunction (ED), a disorder that affects 1 in 10 men worldwide and 10 to 30 million men in the United States alone.1, 2 ED can be caused by several factors, including arterial plaque, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, nerve damage, endocrine imbalance or depression. Ultimately, ED is a condition that affects the blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation.

This randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover pilot study examined the efficacy of pomegranate juice versus placebo in improving erections in 61 male subjects. To qualify, participants had to experience mild to moderate ED for at least 3 months; be in a stable, monogamous relationship with a consenting female partner; and be willing to attempt sexual intercourse on at least one occasion per week during each study period.

Mild ED is defined as the mildly decreased ability to get and keep an erection, while moderate ED is the moderately decreased ability to get and keep an erection. The majority of men with ED have moderate ED.

For the first four weeks of the study, the subjects were assigned to drink either 8 oz. of POM Wonderful Pomegranate Juice or 8 oz. of placebo beverage daily with their evening meal or shortly after. After a two-week washout period during which the subjects did not consume any study beverage nor utilize any ED treatment, they were assigned to drink 8 oz. of the opposite study beverage every evening for another four weeks. At the end of each four week period, efficacy was assessed using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and Global Assessment Questionnaires (GAQ). The IIEF is a validated questionnaire that has been demonstrated to correlate with ED intensity. The GAQ elicits the patient’s self-evaluation of the study beverages’ effect on erectile activity.

Forty seven percent of the subjects reported that their erections improved with POM Wonderful Pomegranate Juice, while only 32% reported improved erections with the placebo (p=0.058). These results compare favorably to a recent 24-week study using a PDE5 inhibitor (such as Cialis), in which roughly 73% of subjects reported a benefit from the PDE5 inhibitor and 26% reported a “placebo effect” (i.e. experiencing improvement while on the placebo).3

Although the study did not achieve overall statistical significance, the authors conclude that additional studies with more patients and longer treatment periods may in fact reach statistical significance. The strong directional results of this pilot study are encouraging because almost half of the test subjects experienced a benefit simply by adding pomegranate juice to their daily diet, without the use of ED drugs.

Researchers believe that the results might be due to the potent antioxidant content of pomegranate juice, which can prevent free radical molecules from disrupting proper circulatory function. In several previously published medical studies, pomegranate juice has been shown to enhance blood flow and to slow or reverse arterial plaque growth.4, 5, 6 Because an erection requires significant blood flow, these potent pomegranate antioxidants may provide benefit by mitigating arterial plaque and promoting blood vessel dilation.

According to study co-author Harin Padma-Nathan, MD, FACS, FRCS, Clinical Professor of Urology at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, “These findings are very encouraging as they suggest there is a non-invasive, non-drug way to potentially alleviate this quality of life issue that affects so many men. For men with ED, it is important to maintain a healthy diet and exercise. Drinking pomegranate juice daily could be an important addition to the diet in the management of this condition.”

Skin care from the inside

By Lenore S. Greenstein

Is it possible to eat your way to smoother, healthier skin? According to the latest research, changing your diet can help you look younger. New studies have shown that two nutrients, namely vitamin C and a fat called omega-6 linoleic acid, helped to prevent those inevitable wrinkles and thinning of the skin that comes with age.
A recent study of more than 4,000 women between the ages of 40 and 74, reported in "The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," showed that women who ate more foods rich in vitamin C were less likely to have wrinkles, as well as higher intakes of omega-6 linoleic acid were associated with less dryness and atrophy of the skin.

On the minus side, an increase in certain kinds of fats and carbohydrates also increased the likelihood of aging skin.

Skin aging was defined as a wrinkled appearance or dryness as a result of aging and skin thinning or atrophy.

Researchers claimed that this is the first skin-aging study to concentrate on daily intake of nutrients from food, rather than supplements. Dermatologists even did clinical examinations of the skin to gauge the appearance of the women's skin.

Women who reported lower intakes of vitamin C in their diets were found to have the highest incidences of wrinkled and dry skin.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can boost your immune system and has also been shown to play a role in the synthesis of collagen, a protein that helps retain the skin's elasticity.

Some of the best sources of vitamin C are citrus fruits, like oranges and grapefruits, strawberries, red bell peppers, broccoli, tomatoes, papaya, guava and kiwi.

Eating more linoleic acid, the omega-6 fatty acid found in abundance in nuts, whole grains, vegetable oils such as safflower, sunflower corn and soybean, pumpkin seeds, wheat germ, eggs, and poultry, also proved to be associated with more youthful skin.
And finally, do not forget Omega 5 oil from the seeds of pomegranates which for centuries has been known to have health benefits.

This type of fat is very common in the American diet, especially since corn oil is found in a wide variety of foods, so it may not be necessary to increase the amount you are consuming unless you are on a low-fat dietary regimen.

The biggest offenders of unhealthy skin are foods high in saturated fats such as red meat, full-fat dairy products, butter, lard, dark-meat poultry and oils that are used in fried foods, fast food, desserts and creamy sauces.

Excessive fat and trans-fats are not healthy for your heart so substituting olive oil and omega-3 rich fats in fatty fish, walnuts and flaxseed will achieve an all-around improvement in your nutrition lifestyle.

While a diet high in carbohydrates was shown to increase the aging of the skin, all carbohydrates are not bad for you. It is beneficial to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables you eat every day, while reducing the amount of processed carbs such as white breads, pastas, rice and sugar-filled foods like cookies, cakes and candy.

You may also find a benefit from the use of certain foods in skin products such as masques, moisturizers, scrubs and cleansers. Oatmeal, avocado and yogurt are just a few of the ingredients that are popular in commercial as well as homemade scrubs and masques.

Recommendations for a healthier-looking skin would not be complete without a final word to:
A) Stay hydrated (especially in the warm weather in Southwest Florida) by drinking enough water;
B) Moisturize your skin to keep it smooth and avoid dryness;
C) Wear sunscreen to avoid the damaging ultraviolet rays that can hurt your skin and cause pre-mature aging.
